Statement by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand on the Question of Tibet

Since ancient times, Tibet has been an inseparable part of China, and China has indisputable sovereignty over Tibet. Since the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951and the democratic reform in 1959, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and with the joint efforts of people of all ethnic groups, Tibet has experienced an epoch-making change, which is obvious to all those without bias.

If anything has been eradicated in today’s Tibet, it is the Theocratic ruling system and Feudal Serfdom in the old Tibet, which was demolished with the socialist transformation and reform. The Feudal Serfdom in old Tibet, one of the darkest and cruelest slavery system in the modern and contemporary world history, only serves the interests and privileges of a small handful of ruling officials, aristocrats and high-ranking lamas, who were entitled to kill, chop hands and feet, gouge eyes, and cut tongues of those enslaved to them in a wanton manner.

If anything is eradicated in today’s Tibet, it is absolute poverty, which was wiped out in 2019 as part of the  national campaign to build a moderately prosperous society in all respects. With broad support of the Central Government and fellow provinces and regions, and through the joint efforts by local people, today’s Tibet is experiencing constant economic development, boasting the fastest growth of per capita income across the whole country for many years. Compared with the miserable life of the majority of serfs under the Serfdom in old Tibet, people of various ethnic groups in Tibet have enjoyed a greater sense of accomplishment, happiness and security, and moderately prosperous lives.

With continuous efforts and investment, the traditional Tibetan culture has been well-protected and thrived, and  religious and cultural undertakings are flourishing. The Tibetan ethnic people have become an equal and essential part of the great Chinese nation of the 56 ethnic groups, and have become the true masters of the country. This presents the true picture of today’s Tibet, a stark contrast to the serfdom period when the overwhelming majority (95%) of the Tibetan people were subjected to oppression and exploitation by the privileged theocratic ruling class.

The so-called “Tibetan government in-exile” is fabricating lies in an attempt to describe the most cold-blooded serfdom as a “Paradise-lost” and even attempt to revive it, which, to most Tibetan people, is utterly “Hell-escaped”.The sole and whole purpose of the so-called “Tibetan government in-exile” is to separate Tibet from China, in their vain attempt to restore the abhorrent serfdom and their privileges. And they are using “full autonomy ”as a figleaf or cover for their attempt to seek “Tibetan Independence”.

There is a clear consensus in the international community that recognizes Tibet as part of China. Not a single country recognizes the so called “Tibetan government-in-exile” ,whose ulterior purpose of separating Tibet from China is firmly opposed by all the Chinese people including the Tibetan compatriots.

With joint efforts and based on the principle of mutual respect, seeking commonality while shelving differences, and win-win cooperation, the China-New Zealand relations have made significant strides over the decades, which have brought tangible benefits to the two countries, particularly two peoples. This hard-won situation deserves to be held dear and well-nurtured continuously. It is clear, however, that there are certain forces that hate to see the healthy and steady development of China-New Zealand relations, and hate to see the success of the upcoming high-level engagement between our two countries. We appreciate the commitment made by the State of New Zealand that Tibet is part of China, and China owns indisputable sovereignty over Tibet. It is our firm belief that attempts to disrupt and sabotage healthy and steady development of China-New Zealand relations are doomed to failure.

We resolutely oppose the visit by so called “Tibetan government-in-exile” to trumpet“Tibetan Independence”, whatever disguise they resort to, and spread groundless lies. We hope and trust that both the Government and the public in relevant countries will not be misled or beguiled by the lies fabricated and spread by them.
