On the evening of February 20, the New Zealand China Friendship Society (NZCFS) hosted a 2016 Chinese-New Zealand Celebration Dinner in Wellington. Over 100 people attended the event including China's Ambassador to New Zealand Wang Lutong and his wife, NZCFS President Dave Bromwich, Wellington Branch President Michael Powles and his wife, former President of the Asia New Zealand Foundation Philip Burden, former New Zealand Ambassador to China Tony Browne, officials from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Ethnic Affairs and representatives from the NZCFS Wellington Branch and local Chinese community.

     

In his speech, Ambassador Wang Lutong extended his New Year's greetings to the participating guests. Reflecting in the past year, Ambassador Wang briefed the guests of the significant progress achieved by China and New Zealand in the political, economic, cultural, education and tourism fields. Ambassador Wang highly commended the significant contribution made by the New Zealand China Friendship Society for its promotion of friendship between China and New Zealand. Ambassador Wang hoped the NZCFS would continue it positive contribution towards enhancing mutual understanding and exchanges between the two countries.

        

Dave Bromwich, Michael Powles and Philip Burden delivered speeches at the dinner, speaking highly of the status of the China – New Zealand relationship and appreciating the support and assistance rendered by the Chinese Government and the Chinese Embassy to the NZCFS over the years. They all noted that this year, the NZCFS would continue its efforts to further advance friendly relations between China and New Zealand.

The atmosphere of the dinner was convivial; with the participants speaking about China – New Zealand friendship in a positive manner. The host also organised an interesting quiz on 'How much do you know about Chinese culture?' and prize draws. The guests participated in the activities with great enthusiasm.
