April 30 – May 2, 2016, Xinjiang Cultural Exchange Delegation from the State Council Information Office led by Mr Xing Guangcheng, Director of Institute of Chinese Borderland Studies of CASS, visited New Zealand and exchanged views with officials from the Office of Ethnic Community of New Zealand. Mr. Qu Guangzhou, Chargé d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy met with the delegation during their visit and briefed the members on China – New Zealand relations and New Zealand ethnic affairs polices.

The Delegation provided an overview of Xinjiang Autonomous Region's economic development, emphasizing that the Chinese Government protected minority rights and religious freedom. China also complied with anti-terrorism policies, and called on the international community to work together to face the challenges presented by terrorism. The New Zealand side introduced the composition of ethnic minorities in New Zealand, the duties and practices of the Office of Ethic Community, and illustrated the direction of development, taking Auckland (which is the largest multicultural city – and source of minority communities) as an example. The two sides expressed a willingness to enhance future exchanges and cooperation, sharing useful experiences to cope with the threats posed by violence and terrorism in an effective manner.

On May 2, the Delegation met and exchanged views with leaders from the local Chinese community and overseas students from Xinjiang.
