Ambassador Wang Lutong Attends the Commemorative Reception of Rewi Alley

On April 20, Ambassador Wang Lutong attended the Commemorative Reception of the 90th Anniversary of Rewi Alley's First Arrival in China and delivered a speech. The function was held by the New Zealand China Council in Auckland. Rewi Alley was a famous New Zealander who renowned as one of the best friends to China. Over 100 people attended the reception, including Consul General Xu Erwen, the Consulate General of the PRC in Auckland; New Zealand’s Science and Innovation Minister, Paul Goldsmith; Mayor of Auckland, Phil Golf; Chairman of the New Zealand China Council, Sir Don McKinnon; MP Yang Jian and Rewi Alley's nephew, Dr Roderick Alley.

In his speech, Ambassador Wang Lutong highly praised Rewi Alley for his outstanding contribution to the cause of China's revolution and construction, illustrating the selfless dedication and the spirit of internationalism of Rewi Alley in his unremitting efforts to promote friendship between the two peoples. Ambassador Wang also reviewed the development of bilateral relations and the achievements of exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, under the inspiration and guidance of the spirit of Rewi Alley, looking forward to bright prospects for China – New Zealand relations.

Dr. Roderick Alley and other speakers reviewed touching stories of Rewi Alley in dedicating his whole life to the cause of China's national independence and construction, speaking highly of his great contribution to the friendship between China and New Zealand, and positively evaluated the achievements of cooperation in various fields, especially the results of Premier Li Keqiang's recent visit to New Zealand. The addressing guests all noted that they would inherit and carry forward the precious spiritual legacy left by Rewi Alley to further advance friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

A short film of Rewi Alley’s story was screened at the reception, and a Chinese national musical instrument performance was also staged. The atmosphere of the reception was cordial and joyful.
