The Chinese Embassy in New Zealand holds a commemorative reception of the 90th Anniversary of Rewi Alley's First Arrival in China

On the evening of April 27, the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand held a commemorative reception of the 90th Anniversary of Rewi Alley's First Arrival in China. Over 200 people attended the reception, including guests from New Zealand ministries of domestic and foreign affairs, foreign envoys in New Zealand and representatives from New Zealand's cultural, education and business communities. Political Counselor, Qu Guangzhou; New Zealand National Party MP, Dr Yang Jian; Rewi Alley's nephew, Dr Roderick Alley and New Zealand's former Ambassador to China, Michael Powles, delivered speeches respectively.

In his speech, Counselor Qu Guangzhou praised Rewi Alley as the messenger of friendship between China and New Zealand, a great internationalist fighter and an international friend most loved by the Chinese people. Counselor Qu noted that the best way to commemorate Rewi Alley is to keep in mind his contributions and practice his spirit, so as to make further contributions to the strengthening of friendly relations between the two countries.

Dr Roderick Alley briefed the audience on the early experiences of Rewi Alley and his character, reviewing touching stories of Rewi Alley in dedicating his whole life to the cause of China's national independence and construction. Dr. Alley spoke highly of Rewi Alley's great contributions to the friendship between China and New Zealand.

A short video of Rewi Alley's story was screened at the reception to remind the guests of the touching activities engaged in by Mr Alley during his stay in China.
