HE Amb Wang Xiaolong Held Virtual Meeting with Hon O’Connor, Minister for Trade and Export Growth

On April 14th, HE Ambassador Wang Xiaolong held a virtual meeting with Hon Damien O’Connor, Minister for Trade and Export Growth, to celebrate the entry into force of the Upgrade Protocol of China-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA). 

Ambassador Wang acknowledged that the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties between China and New Zealand is a major milestone for the evolving bilateral relationship, and welcomed that the Upgrade Protocol of China-New Zealand FTA came into force on April 7th 2022, opening a new chapter for China-New Zealand economic and trade cooperation. Ambassador Wang appreciated Hon Minister O’Connor for sending out a positive message in his statement on the Upgrade and his remarks at NZCTA 2021 China Business Awards virtual ceremony on April 7th. Ambassador Wang expressed the willingness to work with New Zealand to seize opportunities and take the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries to a higher level. 

Hon Minister O’Connor agreed that the Upgrade is a good news for both countries in a world of increasing challenges, further accelerating the economic recovery from COVID-19 for both sides. Hon Minister O’Connor stated that it has been a different world since the bilateral FTA was signed, and the Upgrade makes the bilateral relations stronger. Hon Minister O’Connor pointed out, as the Upgrade modernises the original agreement, and New Zealand is re-opening its borders and reconnecting with the world from COVID-19, the two countries will enjoy more opportunities such as in tourism and education-related services.

They also exchange views on bilateral relations, exploring practical cooperation in various areas, China’s accession to CPTPP and DEPA, among others.
