HE Ambassador Wang Xiaolong met with Hon Phil Goff, Mayor of Auckland

On June 17, Ambassador Wang Xiaolong met with Hon Phil Goff, Mayor of Auckland. They exchanged views on China-New Zealand relations, local cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

Ambassador Wang appreciated Goff's contribution to China-New Zealand relations as a veteran New Zealand politician. He said that over the past 50 years of China-New Zealand diplomatic relations, the development of bilateral relations has brought great benefits to the two countries and the two peoples, and at the same time, made positive contribution to the regional and global peace and development. The signing of the China-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement has greatly promoted the sustained growth of China-New Zealand economy and trade cooperation, and exchanges and cooperation in various fields such as education, science and technology, and culture have been flourishing. Chinese community has made important contribution to the building of diverse society in New Zealand, and also served as a bridge in the development of China-New Zealand relations. Auckland has the largest group of Chinese community in New Zealand and it is hoped that the Auckland Council would continue to help to provide them with an open, inclusive and favorable environment for their living, studying and working.

Mayor Goff commended on China's great achievements in economic and social development and the great progress of bilateral relations over the past 50 years of China-New Zealand diplomatic relations. The New Zealand-China Free Trade Agreement has brought about great advancement in bilateral trade. Remarkable achievements have also been made in cooperation in various areas such as people-to-people and cultural exchanges, education and tourism. People-to-people ties have become an important pillar for bilateral relations. There is a long history of Chinese immigration to New Zealand and the  Chinese community is playing an important role in New Zealand society. The Auckland Council attaches great importance to the friendly and cooperative relations with Chinese cities, particularly Guangzhou. Mayor Goff appreciated the Chinese community for their contribution to the economic and social development of Auckland, and reiterated the willingness to continue to provide support and assistance for them to live, study and work in Auckland.
