Remarks by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand on Xinjiang-related Issues

We have noted that some countries have raised so-called concerns over Xinjiang-related issues at the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

We strongly oppose such actions from the relevant countries. Xinjiang-related issues are China’s internal affairs, which brook no external interference. Xinjiang’s economic development and social stability is widely recognized, and the fact that residents of all ethnic groups there enjoy happy and fulfilling lives is witnessed by all who keep an open mind and open eyes. The essence of some forces’ repeated fabrication and trouble-making with Xinjiang-related issues is nothing but politically driven manipulation in the disguise of human rights concerns.

In fact, at the Third Committee, over 100 UN member states spoke up for justice and voiced support for China by joint, individual, or collective statement. They spoke against the politicization of human rights issues and interference in China’s internal affairs in the name of human rights. The attempt of a handful of Western countries to hold back and contain China under the pretext of human rights was thwarted once again.

In a world fraught with crises and challenges, solidarity and cooperation matter more than ever. Driven by the Cold War mentality, the relevant countries have put themselves on the opposite side of the international community by inciting confrontation at multilateral fora based on disinformation. These countries do not acknowledge their own human rights woes or those of their so-called allies, such as persistent racial discrimination and violation of migrants’ rights, and neglect the severe and large-scale human rights infringement unfolding in the world. We urge the relevant countries to face squarely and address their own human rights issues, assess China’s human rights development and achievements in a just and objective way, stop politicizing human rights or using them as an excuse to interfere in China’s internal affairs, and create favourable conditions for constructive international human rights and broader exchanges and cooperation.
