Remarks by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand on Universal Periodic Review at the United Nations Human Rights Council

We have noted that recently, during China's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the United Nations Human Rights Council, some countries have made unfounded accusations on the human rights issues against China. We deplore and oppose such actions from relevant countries.

The Chinese government has always committed to the promotion and protection of human rights. Following a people-centred philosophy, China has successfully found a human rights development path that echoes the trend of the times and suits our national conditions. We ensure that human rights are enjoyed equally by all and that all ethnic groups of China are equal, respect the religious beliefs of the people and protect the legitimate rights and interests of all ethnic groups. We strictly crack down on various illegal and criminal activities to maintain long-term social stability. As a result, Chinese people are enjoying a greater sense of fulfilment, happiness, and security. The historic progress in China’s human rights cause has been highly appreciated and supported by the Chinese people and widely recognized by the international community.

Some countries, turning a blind eye to the dire condition of human rights at home and of their allies, disregarding the facts about the development of China’s human rights cause, groundlessly accused and smeared China and even confused black and white out of ideological bias and unfounded mis-and-dis-information, politicizing and weaponizing the human rights issues and even the UPR mechanism, whose founding vision is as an important platform for countries to carry out constructive dialogue and cooperation. Their real purpose is to smear China’s image, interfere in China’s internal affairs and contain and suppress China’s development under the disguise of human rights. Such actions are clearly not conducive to the international human rights cause and contravene the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and the universally recognized basic norms governing international relations.

We hope that the international community can view China’s efforts and achievements in human rights development as well as China’s contribution to advancing international human rights governing and human rights cause in a more objective, fair and comprehensive way. China looks forward to enhancing mutual understanding and learning through candid communication and sincere dialogue with other countries on an equal footing and in a mutually respectful way so as to work for more equitable, just, reasonable and inclusive global human rights governance, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
