On August 30, 2025, the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand hosted a special screening for the film The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru in Wellington. Ambassador Wang Xiaolong attended the event and delivered remarks. About 700 attendees participated in the screening, including officials of the New Zealand government, as well as representatives from local Chinese community and Chinese students.

Ambassador Wang stated that this year marks the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. A series of commemorative events will be held globally. On September 3rd, a grand commemorative ceremony and military parade will be held in Beijing. We commemorate this historic milestone not to perpetuate hatred, but to remember the history, heed its lessons, and honor those who stood up—some even sacrificed their lives—for peace and justice. “Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it.” We must learn from history, cherish and safeguard peace together, and jointly create a brighter future.
He introduced that the documentary The Sinking of Lisbon Maru recreates a true historical event that took place off the coast of Zhejiang, China during World War II. The film portrays the brutality of war and the suffering it caused. More importantly, it conveys the courage, kindness, and selflessness of the Chinese people, and celebrates the beauty and brilliance of humanity.

Audiences were deeply moved by the documentary, noting that it brings this once little-known chapter of history to the world’s attention, and inspiring all to remember the past and cherish peace.
