Q: The United States and New Zealand have recently announced plans to build a deep-water port at a former military base in the Cook Islands. Does the Embassy have any comment?

A: We have noted the relevant reports, as well as statements from the parties concerned that this trilateral cooperation among the United States, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands is intended to support the development of the Cook Islands, particularly its northern islands.

For a long time, China has adhered to the principles of mutual respect, equality, and common development in its practical cooperation with Pacific Island countries, including the Cook Islands, in areas such as infrastructure, poverty reduction, and climate change response. Our purpose is not to engage in geopolitical competition, but to help these island nations effectively address real-world challenges and achieve sustainable development.

China has consistently maintained that cooperation between countries should not target any third party, and should be conducive to safeguarding regional peace and stability. We hope that relevant countries, in pursuing cooperation with Pacific Island countries, will likewise act in the spirit of mutual respect and openness, and genuinely support Pacific Island countries and other developing countries and regions in achieving their development goals.
