Remembering History, Cherishing Peace, and Working Together for a Brighter Future in China-New Zealand Relations
——Remarks by Ambassador Wang Xiaolong at the 76th National Day Reception
Deputy Secretary Grahame Morton,
Dean and Fellow Members of the Diplomatic Corps,
Members of the Chinese Community in New Zealand,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Friends,
Good evening!
We are gathered here today to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. To begin with, please allow me to extend a warm welcome to all our guests and express my sincere gratitude to friends from all walks of life who have long supported China's development and contributed to the friendship between China and New Zealand.
Over the past 76 years, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the Chinese people have worked tirelessly and courageously to pioneer and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics. We have achieved a historic leap from poverty to moderate prosperity, and today, are advancing confidently toward building a modern socialist country.
Particularly since the 18th CPC National Congress, we have built a moderately prosperous society in all respects, eradicated absolute poverty, deepened reforms across the board, and made remarkable progress on multiple fronts—creating a development miracle that astounds the world.
Amid today's complex and changing international landscape, China's economy remains resilient. In the first half of this year, the country's GDP grew by 5.3% year-on-year, and is on track to achieve considerable annual growth. What's more, the quality of that growth is also rising: our economic structure is improving, new drivers of growth and productivity are emerging, and breakthroughs are being made in quantum communications, new energy, artificial intelligence and many other areas. The digital and green economies are thriving, and products like electric vehicles and lithium batteries are making their mark globally.
Meanwhile, China remains firmly committed to openness and win-win cooperation. We continue to host major expos such as the China International Import Expo, the China International Fair for Trade in Services and the Canton Fair, actively implement the RCEP agreement, and seek accession to CPTPP and DEPA to align with high-standard international trade rules. Now as a major trading partner for more than 150 countries and regions, and signatories to 23 free trade agreements, China is ready to share opportunities for growth with all countries, including New Zealand.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. As the main eastern theater of the global combat against fascism, China made enormous sacrifices for and significant contributions to defeating Japanese militarism. Chinese forces tied down the majority of Japan's military strength overseas, providing critical support to Allied forces across other fronts. As President Franklin Roosevelt once noted, if China were to collapse, it would be beyond U.S. power to prevent Japan from taking Australia, India, and attacking the Middle East.
During the 14 years of resistance, China suffered more than 35 million casualties, and over 930 cities were ravaged by warfare. At this critical moment for national survival, the Communist Party of China played a pivotal role by initiating and then leading the national united front against Japanese aggression. Under this banner, the Chinese people both at home and abroad united to fight the formidable enemy with an iron will, formed a great wall with flesh and blood to defend the nation, and ultimately achieved the first complete victory in resisting foreign aggression in modern Chinese history. China's national anthem, “March of the Volunteers”, born in those fiery years and sung a moment ago, still echoes the spirit and courage of those times.
Notably, China's victory would not have been possible without the support of the international anti-fascist alliance and friends from around the world. The Soviet Red Army, the American Flying Tigers, and even Japanese soldiers who joined the Eighth Route Army fought alongside the Chinese people. New Zealand, too, played a meaningful role. As some of you may have already noticed, the collection of historic photos displayed here today tell moving stories of New Zealanders and overseas Chinese in this country who gave generously in support of China's war effort. These flashbacks of history still resonate deeply today.
The great internationalist Mr. Rewi Alley initiated and organized the Gung Ho movement, enabling vital industrial production in China's wartime hinterlands. The “Angel in White”, Ms. Kathleen Hall, saved lives at the risk of her own in the Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region, embodying the very spirit of humanitarianism. The brave journalist Mr. James Bertram used his pen as a weapon to expose the atrocities of Japanese militarism to the world, conveying the unyielding battle cries of the Chinese people. Mr. Bertram even took part in the defense of Hong Kong himself, leading to his imprisonment and torture by the Japanese. The Chinese people will always remember the profound friendship built together with the people of New Zealand during those challenging years.
History carries the legacy of the past, and more importantly, crystallizes inspiration for the future. This year, on September 3, China held victory commemorations to remember the history, honor fallen heroes, and renew our commitment to working together to cherish peace, and create a better future. Japanese militarism brought profound suffering to the Chinese people—and also to the Japanese people. We look back on history not to perpetuate hatred, but to draw wisdom from the painful lessons, prevent the recurrence of tragedy, and safeguard peace for all.
Today, the world stands at a new crossroads—humanity again has to choose between peace and war, dialogue and confrontation, and win-win cooperation and zero-sum game. China firmly stands on the right side of history and the side of the progress of human civilization. Chinese President Xi Jinping has put forward the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and more recently, the Global Governance Initiative. Together, they aim to promote sovereign equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered approach and real actions—all in the interest of building a more just and equitable international order.
Having gone through immense war traumas, China understands the value of peace more than anyone else. As the first country to sign the UN Charter, we have all along supported the international system with the UN at its core, and the international order underpinned by international law. In this regard, we've upheld fairness and justice, defended free trade and the multilateral trading system, advocated for an equal and orderly multipolar world, and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization to build a community with a shared future for humanity. Meanwhile, as a developing and thriving nation, China remains fully capable of safeguarding our own sovereignty and development interests.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On this journey toward promoting global peace and development, China stands ready to seek greater cooperation with all countries around the world, including New Zealand, to tackle common challenges. We regard New Zealand as an important friend and partner. For more than 50 years since we established diplomatic ties, our relationship has long spearheaded China's relations with Western developed countries—delivering tangible benefits for people in both countries.
High-level exchanges continue to steer our bilateral relations. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's successful visit to China in June of this year enabled our leaders to reach broad consensus and sign multiple cooperation agreements—injecting new energy into our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Within this year, we expect to see continued active engagement across all levels.
China and New Zealand have different histories, cultures, and political systems. It's natural that we may sometimes see things differently. Yet we have no historical grievances or fundamental conflicts of interest. What we share are common interests that far outweigh our differences. In this connection, we should always treat each other with respect and equality, honor each other's core interests and major concerns, approach differences with openness, and focus on cooperation that benefits both sides.
This year marks the start of the second decade of our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. China looks forward to working with the New Zealand side to enhance strategic communication, deepen our complementary economic ties, expand cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and uphold the multilateral trading system as well as international justice and fairness. This not only serves the well-being of both our peoples, but also brings much-needed stability and constructive energy to a world beset by turmoil and transformation.
Before I conclude, may I invite you to join me in a toast:
To His Majesty King Charles III of New Zealand,
To the friendship and cooperation between China and New Zealand,
To world peace and prosperity,
Cheers!
Thank you.
